LECTURES :

Lecture 1 - Format

In Our first session Mr vinod briefed us about the module, the projects and exercises that we would be doing for class.

After which , we were briefed on about our project 1, he showed us some of our senior's works. We should be starting our content gathering by next week. The lecture "formats" was to be in YouTube lecture playlist he provided.

In the lecture he explained to us , how different civilizations and their different types of formats have changed over time to present day.

Lecture 2 - History of prints

This lecture was focused on the evolvement of print through time as well as the different techniques involved

Along with that we did our exercises in class , so we can focus on our project 1 using all the time .

Lecture 3 -  Typo Redux

Lecture 4 -  The Grid

Lecture 5 -  Elements

INSTRUCTIONS

EXCERCISES

Exercise 1 - Book Mock up

For this exercise we had to make different sizes of a book smaller than A4 but bigger than A5. The lengths could be any between that  range .

I started with following sizes :
  • 220mm x 195mm
  • 235mm x 170mm

Fig 1.1 Book sizes

I chose my first size to be 220mm x 195 mm as marked by the blue marker.

After which i made a cut out to see how the size felt .

Fig 1.2 cut out 220mm x 195mm

After doing this cut I didn't really like size and also i made some rough cuts so I just repeated the process with different sizes.

The new sizes i chose were :

  • 220mm x 173mm
  • 213mm x 165mm

Fig 1.3 New sizes

This time i chose the size to be
213mm x 165mm as marked with the marker

After choosing the size I made another test cut with this size.

Fig 1.4 New size test cut

The test cut was satisfactory for me so i moved on to cutting out 8 more spreads to make a book mock up .

After which To bind them together , I used 4 paperclips which I thought were pretty convenient

Here is the final of the book mock up

Project 1 - Initial project 1

In this part we had to write 3000 words as a short story an text format it , this is also used in our project 1

3000 words

Exercise 2 - Signature fold

Exercise 2 in class we were told what a signature fold is and what is the process of it .

Fig1.7 signature fold open

After folding we had to trim the edges and to make a book layout with their page numbers

Exercise 3 - Van De Graaf

Exercise 4 - Digital van der graph

Ex 4 we had to recreate Vander graph digitally in indesign

Exercise 5 - Grid Analysis

For exercise 5 mr vinod told us to choose three book layers we find interesting and analyse their Grid systems

Grids Thumbnail

Exercises 6 - Form and movement

For this excelsis we were asked to make layouts and form a visual movement through the pages using elements

Attempt 1

Animated GIF

Honestly could not get a hang of the exercise But i tried .

After consultation Mr vinod cleared up a lot of the information and told me to rework it , here is the second attempt

And lastly we had to add text to our form and movement exercises

Feedback

Week 1

- absent

Week 2

- Start looking for visual references
- Complete exercises - Get some recreated visuals before next class - Take care of text format line breaks

Week 3

- Be more conceptual rather than literal. - Try looking at psychedelic illustrations - Use Pattern and textures

Week 4

- Visuals need a re work
- Form need to be more variable and on both sides
- Little relationship between spreads
- "Feel the movement"

Week 5

- On the right path with the visuals now , just finish them in time .
- Form and movement is better.
- The ending needs to be better
- Introduce colour and image
- Move to text
- Half title page till end of chapter 1 for next week

Reflections

Initially I went into the module pretty blank and not knowing what expect , But that quickly changed to a very good mood as our exercises started to progress . Since we were doing the exercises in class i think it gave me a more easier time as i could spend all my time working on my project 1 etc. I think  at least one of the factors i really liked that we we were given a chance to write our content and make our own art work , really kept me indulged and interested through the weeks.
